We are in an unprecedented time in our history. Many of you cannot go to work and have no income. How will your child support be affected by COVID-19?
The Supreme Court of Texas has issued an emergency order stating that all orders and decrees remain in effect during this crisis and shall be followed. So that means that the intention is that you have to pay child support as ordered.
But what if you have lost your job and cannot pay the support? What will happen then? The courts are closed, so you could not go to court to modify the payment amount. People will not be held in contempt for failing to pay child support if their jobs were affected by covid-19. But the missed payments will not go away. I believe that you will probably face a child support arrearage judgment later.
If you are not receiving child support because of covid-19, that is a difficult situation. There is nothing you can do but wait until the courts open again.
